Choosing the Right Pleached Tree for Your Garden
This section explains the different choices for our pleached trees, such as how tall the trunks are and how thick they can grow. This guide will help you understand how much the tree’s leaves might grow in one season. Keep in mind that this is just a general idea—growth may be different depending on the type of tree. If you’d like to see a picture of a specific tree, just ask! At Twilight Gardens, we’re here to help you pick the best tree for your garden.
How to Pick the Right Pleached Tree
Choosing the right pleached tree depends on your garden and what you want the tree to do. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, younger trees with thinner trunks, around 8-10cm wide, are a good start. These trees will grow into their shape over time. But if you want a tree that gives you privacy or blocks out a view right away, it’s better to go with a tree that has a thicker trunk—about 12cm or more, depending on the type.
If you need the tree to provide cover above fences or walls, pay attention to the tree’s clear stem height (the part of the trunk before the leaves start). A good choice is a pleached tree with a 12-14cm thick trunk and a clear stem height of around 1.8 meters. This option gives you some privacy in the first season and is affordable. It’s a good all-round choice for most gardens, offering both looks and practical use.
Clear Stem Heights
Pleached trees come in different heights, measured from the ground to where the leaves start growing. At Twilight Gardens, most of our pleached trees have a clear stem height of about 1.8 meters. This height is often called "full standard," which means the trunk is tall enough to work well in most gardens.
When choosing a tree, remember that younger trees might not have full leaves covering the whole frame just yet. But with time and care, the leaves will grow and fill out nicely.
Stem Girth
Stem girth is the measurement around the tree’s trunk. It tells you how thick and grown the tree is. Trees with a bigger stem girth are usually older and have more leaves, making them fuller. Younger pleached trees might not cover their frame completely right away, but with good care, they will grow and fill out over the next few seasons. When choosing a tree, think about how it will grow in the future. At Twilight Gardens, our pleached trees come in three sizes: 8-10cm, 10-12cm, and 12-14cm stem girths.
